Soon has dedicated 50 years of his life to train and study Shotokan Karate-do as pre-scribed and supported JKA Chief Instructor Masatoshi Nakayama illustrated in Best Karate. His successful career started as student of sensei Norman Robinson at the tender age of 7 years old and hardly misses a day without training in persuade of mastering Shotokan techniques.
Competition Karate motivated him especially during his 7 years as university student but decided to dedicate his career as Karate practitioner as teacher and judge after winning the JKA World Championships in 1998. A highlight was recognition from the late Nelson Mandela, the President of South Africa.
Soon was the first South African to receive World Referee License in WKF Kata and Kumite as well as awarded AAA Judge status in Shobu Ippon rules. His long journey as adjudicator in WKF and JSKA World events has provided an unsurmountable experience as practitioner.
The creation of a modern tool to empower young practitioners of Karate-do, encourage young students of the Art of Unarmed Combat and equip instructors of Shotokan to provide a better product, had been a dream.
This project was originally motivated in 2007 when a student suggested compiling all Shotokan Kata on video. It had been my thesis for Dan examination named “Kata is Kumite” that sparked Karate Best Kata. Many years of training, instructing and research initiated Karate Bast Kata, a profes-sional recording of all Shotokan Kata based on Best Karate of Masatoshi Nakayama.
In Level 1 each Kata is performed to illustrate timing and speed. Level 2 is a practical explanation and demonstration of selected individual movements or combinations of the specific Kata. Level 3 is a guide to mastery of the specific Kata through drills and practical training methods. In Level 4 a hidden secret of the Kata under discussion.
Our aim is to expand by adding regular relevant articles, we will include teaching themes and we will communicate with members on a regular personal basis. We will spread our knowledge and understanding of Shotokan across the world. We will deepen our training and teaching standard and exploit the vast collection of knowledge.
